Gallardo encouraged after first rehab start

Working back from biceps tendinitis, O's starter goes 3 IP in Class A; Triple-A outing set for Tuesday

BALTIMORE -- A day after making his first rehab start with Class A Advanced Frederick, Orioles starter Yovani Gallardo was back in Baltimore's clubhouse with his teammates Friday as he rests between outings.
Gallardo, who allowed three runs in three innings Thursday night, said his arm feels good. He was placed on the disabled list April 23 with biceps tendinitis.
"I feel great today," Gallardo said. "A little soreness, which is expected. Nothing crazy, nothing different from your normal soreness. It's more of my ... lat, which I guess is a good sign, because it means I'm getting a full extension to release the ball.
"It's actually really well, a lot better than I thought I would feel, so I'm excited."
Manager Buck Showalter said Gallardo will make his second rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Norfolk in a 12:05 p.m. ET first pitch against Durham. They want to stretch him out to 75-80 pitches in the outing.
"Hopefully five-plus innings, and then we'll have a decision to make whether he needs another one or not," Showalter said. "We hope we have that [and] everything goes well physically between now and then. Just talking to him, you can tell from his face that he feels good where he is."
If Gallardo is ready after Tuesday's start, he would be eligible to pitch June 12 for the Orioles at Toronto. That spot in the rotation is currently in flux after Mike Wright struggled in Wednesday's start, allowing six runs in 2 2/3 innings.
The Orioles haven't announced who will start Monday, which would be Wright's scheduled day. Wright was optioned to Triple- A on Thursday, but he was recalled Friday when Darren O'Day went on the disabled list.
