Gallardo receives cortisone injection in biceps

Orioles unsure about pitcher's return to rotation

ST. PETERSBURG -- Yovani Gallardo rejoined the Orioles in St. Petersburg on Monday, and he will remain with the team while he rests from a cortisone injection in his right biceps.
Gallardo was placed on the disabled list on Saturday after he exited Friday's start after just two innings with the injury. He had an MRI on Sunday that didn't show anything new, and the Orioles are taking that as a positive sign.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he's encouraged by the diagnosis after talking to the team's medical staff, and he reminded reporters that Gallardo got a late start to Spring Training.
"He wasn't behind, but there was no margin for error there. I think he may have pushed a little early, so I think this may be a good period for him," Showalter said. "I have a lot of confidence that we'll get the pitcher back that he's capable of being."
The Orioles don't have a timeline on Gallardo, and they likely won't until he picks up a ball within the next week. They're hoping his situation is similar to that of Monday's starter Kevin Gausman, who was on the disabled list for about a month with right shoulder tendinitis.
The 30-year-old Gallardo, in his 10th Major League season, has never been on the DL for an arm injury, and this was his first cortisone injection. Showalter said that bodes well for the Orioles and that Gallardo was already feeling better on Monday.
