Gallardo: Only thing to do is start new streak

ARLINGTON -- Rangers pitcher Yovani Gallardo's scoreless streak is over. Gallardo's streak came to an end in the top of the fifth inning Tuesday night, when the D-backs, taking advantage of a dropped fly ball, scored two runs off him on their way to a 4-2 victory over the Rangers.

The streak ended at 33 1/3 innings, the third-longest run in club history. Kenny Rogers had a 39-inning scoreless streak in 1995, and Charlie Hough had a 38-inning streak in 1983.

"I knew about it, but I wasn't thinking about it too much," Gallardo said. "I go out there every night trying not to give up runs. There is nothing I can do. It was fun, now it's a matter of starting up another one."

Gallardo entered the game 6-0 with a 0.79 ERA in nine previous games in which he had started after a Rangers loss. The Rangers were 8-1 in those games.

Gallardo had baserunners on in every inning but was able to escape trouble early with a couple of big double plays. The D-backs had two on with nobody out in the second inning when Chris Owings popped up a bunt. Gallardo caught it and threw to first to double off the runner. The D-backs had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth when Nick Ahmed smashed a line drive that second baseman Rougned Odor caught just off the ground. He was able to flip to first to double off the runner.

"Yovani battled for his outs," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "I thought he still threw the ball well."

Gallardo's streak was at 29 1/3 innings entering the game, and it finished at 33 1/3 because only completed scoreless innings are counted unless the pitcher completes only a fraction of an inning that otherwise ends scoreless.

Gallardo's luck started evaporating in the fifth. He was able to knock down A.J. Pollock's line drive up the middle to get the first out of the inning, but then David Peralta launched a drive to deep left. Josh Hamilton raced back and got his glove on it but couldn't make the catch. It went for a triple.

Gallardo walked Paul Goldschmidt and struck out Yasmany Torres. But Goldschmidt stole second on strike three to Tomas, and that put runners on second and third. Gallardo still had a chance to get out of the inning, but Jake Lamb singled to center to give the D-backs a 2-0 lead.

"That base hit in the fifth inning, the broken-bat base hit [by Lamb], what are you going to do about it?" Gallardo said. "Not much you can do about that. Made a good cutter inside, and it broke his bat."

That was the D-backs' only hit in six at-bats with runners in scoring position off Gallardo. But he still had a four-game winning streak snapped and suffered his first loss since May 19 against the Red Sox.
