Another year, another crazy non-waiver Trade Deadline. Eventful as always, the Deadline came and went Monday with several intriguing deals falling into place.
The biggest dominos fell just before the clock struck 4 p.m. ET, with right-hander Yu Darvish going to the Dodgers and right-hander Sonny Gray going to the Yankees. Gray had long been linked to New York, and the two sides made a deal, with the Yankees sending three of their top 15 prospects to Oakland in return. It appeared as though Darvish would be staying put until the Rangers agreed to part ways with their star hurler at the buzzer.
Much like in 2016, relief pitchers also dominated headlines as contending clubs attempted to bolster their bullpen. Justin Wilson, Addison Reed, Tony Watson and Brandon Kintzler found new homes Monday, and all four should provide their teams with a good chance to reach the postseason as they gear up for the stretch run.
However, some of the biggest names rumored to be on the move -- the Tigers' Justin Verlander, the Orioles' Zach Britton and the Padres' Brad Hand -- ended up staying put.

Dodgers acquire Darvish from Rangers, Watson from Pirates and Cingrani from Reds
The 4 p.m. ET Deadline came and went without mention of Darvish being traded. It looked like the electric right-hander was staying in Texas, but then the reports hit: Darvish had been dealt after all, and to the MLB-best Dodgers, no less. Darvish could immediately step in as the ace of a rotation that is missing Clayton Kershaw until he can return from his lower-back strain. It's a big move -- arguably the biggest leading up to the Trade Deadline -- and the Dodgers got their man.
The Rangers will receive a haul of prospects in return for sending Darvish to Los Angeles. The deal will be headlined by 22-year-old second baseman/outfielder Willie Calhoun, the Dodgers' No. 4 prospect and the No. 69 prospect in baseball, according to MLBPipeline.com. The Dodgers will also send two more of their Top 30 prospects, 19-year-old right-hander A.J. Alexy (No. 17) and 20-year-old infielder Brendon Davis (No. 27). But the Dodgers will hold on to their No. 2 prospect and MLB's No. 28, outfielder Alex Verdugo.
Tony Watson began the season as the Bucs' closer before losing the job in June, but he was one of the best relievers in baseball from 2013-16. The Dodgers clearly think he can still bring value to what has already been a dominant bullpen. In exchange, Pittsburgh received prospects infielder Oneil Cruz and right-hander Angel German.
Tony Cingrani, 28, was a third-round Draft pick of the Reds in 2011 and isn't eligible for free agency until 2020. He has a 5.40 ERA in 25 games. Cingrani missed May with an oblique strain and has allowed nine earned runs in his last 5 2/3 innings, adding nearly three runs to his ERA. Yankees acquire Gray from A's for three top prospects
To finally land Gray after days of back and forth, the Yankees sent shortstop/outfielder Jorge Mateo, outfielder Dustin Fowler and right-hander James Kaprielian to Oakland. All were ranked among New York's top 30 prospects -- Fowler at No. 4, Mateo at No. 8 and Kaprielian at No. 12 -- but two, Fowler and Kaprielian, are currently sidelined with major injuries. Kaprielian, the Yanks' first-round pick in the 2015 Draft, is recovering from Tommy John surgery, while Fowler rehabs a serious right knee injury he suffered during his MLB debut in June.
Still, that's a serious return for Gray, who in many ways was the most wanted man on the trade market this July. Not only is Gray, 27, healthy and pitching like one of the best hurlers in baseball again (1.48 ERA this month), but he isn't a free agent until after the 2019 season. As for the present, Gray gives the Yankees two No. 1-types at the front end of their rotation. New York also added rotation depth by acquiring Jaime Garcia on Sunday, and it appears primed for a serious postseason push. More >
Astros acquire LHP Francisco Liriano from Blue Jays for OF Nori Aoki and OF prospect Teoscar Hernandez
Traded at the Deadline for the second time in two seasons and the third time in his career, Liriano struggled in his first full season in Toronto. But the Astros intend to use him as a reliever, as several teams that tried to acquired him did. Liriano has made 29 career relief appearances, but just two since 2012. More >
Indians acquire RHP Joe Smith from Blue Jays for two prospects
In the first of two reliever homecomings of the day, the Indians and sidearmer Joe Smith were reunited. The 11-year veteran is as useful as ever, holding right-handed hitters to a .211 batting average against this season. He pitched for Cleveland from 2009-13. The Tribe sent back left-hander Thomas Pannone and second baseman Samad Taylor to Toronto. More >
Nationals acquire RHP Brandon Kintzler from Twins for LHP prospect Tyler Watson
It was GM Mike Rizzo's directive to improve his bullpen at all costs this Deadline, and while he missed on Britton, Rizzo did revamp his 'pen. Kintzler, 32, is 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA and 28 saves in 45 1/3 innings for the Twins this season. He figures to form a dynamic late-inning trio with lefty Sean Doolittle and righty Ryan Madson, who were acquired from the Athletics earlier this month. More >
Orioles acquire SS Timothy Beckham from Rays for RHP prospect Tobias Myers
Tampa Bay had something of an infield logjam with on its hands since acquiring Lucas Duda gave them four corner infield/designated-hitter types. In the past, second baseman Brad Miller would move over to first, but now he'll predominately play second base. Factor in shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and there wasn't much room for Beckham. More >

Red Sox acquire Reed from Mets for three prospects
The Mets swapped their closer for three of Boston's Top 30 prospects: Stephen Nogosek (No. 18), Jamie Callahan (No. 23) and Gerson Bautista (No. 28). All are right-handed pitchers, like Reed, who gave New York 145 appearances of high-quality relief after coming over from Arizona at the 2015 Deadline. Reed's 2.20 ERA over the past two season ranks fourth-best in baseball among relievers with at least 100 appearances. More >

Cubs acquire Wilson, C Alex Avila from Tigers for No. 1 prospect Jeimer Candelario
Wilson became one of the most coveted pieces on the trade market, and it took the defending champions' best prospect to land the lefty closer. Wilson will likely slide into a setup role behind Wade Davis, giving Chicago another dynamic late-inning option.
The switch-hitting Candelario became expendable when most of the Cubs' historic crop of position-player prospects reached the big leagues over the past three seasons. He becomes Detroit's No. 3 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com.
Avila, who will backup Willson Contreras, is enjoying the best season of his career.
But that's not the only reason his being included in the trade is interesting. His father, Al Avila, is Detroit's general manager. Al Avila is the first GM since 1968 to make a MLB-level trade involving his son, according to MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi. More >
