Britton's ankle fine after spill against Yanks

April 8th, 2017

BALTIMORE -- Orioles closer Zach Britton joked on Saturday afternoon that he woke up and his foot and ankle were still attached to his body -- a good sign that the left-hander, who took a fall on the mound during Friday's 6-5 win over the Yankees, was going to be OK.
A better sign? Britton making jokes about the matter, which came on the second out in the ninth inning.
"There was a bat shard that kind of flew to my right and [I] kinda glanced at it. I pretty much juked myself out," Britton said of his fall. "I told [manager] Buck [Showalter], 'I appreciate the courtesy visit, but I don't need you.'"
Britton got the out on the play, rebounding to throw to first, on a ball that first baseman Chris Davis made a nice pick on. The lefty remained in the game and got the final out to record his second save.

Of course, now that he's OK, Britton took some good-natured ribbing from his teammates about the spill.
"Absolutely," he said when asked if he was teased. "... [Hopefully], we will never see that one again."
