MILWAUKEE -- Just when it couldn't get any worse for the struggling D-backs, it did.
Zack Godley worked out of trouble for three innings before the Brewers erupted for seven runs in the fourth to complete a series sweep with a 9-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park. It was the D-backs' seventh consecutive loss and their 13th in 14 games.
Godley was tagged for eight runs (six earned) on seven hits, six walks and one wild pitch in 3 1/3 innings. The D-backs also contributed two errors during the Brewers' big inning.
"I feel like he wasn't able to execute some pitches and had some counts where he could have finished some hitters off, and just the let at-bats linger," manager Torey Lovullo said. "I think he was really grinding through the entire outing."

The D-backs, who had scored just 26 runs in 14 games, led briefly, erasing a 1-0 deficit on solo homers by Paul Goldschmidt and John Ryan Murphy in the second.
Goldschmidt, whose average had dipped to .198 after starting the road trip 2-for-18, opened the second with his sixth homer, sending a 2-2 pitch from Brent Suter over the wall in left. One out later, Murphy sent the first pitch 426 feet to center, according to Statcast™, for his fifth homer.
"We were able to get a couple runs there and get the lead after they got one," said Goldschmidt, whose homer was his only hit in nine at-bats in the series. "We just were trying to get good at-bats the rest of the game and score some runs, and we weren't able to score."

Godley's lack of command caught up with him in the fourth, aided by sloppy fielding. Jett Bandy singled, then Suter sacrificed and reached on a throwing error by first baseman Goldschmidt. Bandy moved up on a fly out, and Christian Yelich walked to load the bases.
Jesus Aguilar followed with a two-run single up the middle to put the Brewers up 3-2. Travis Shaw then ripped a 2-2 pitch to right for his 12th homer to make it 6-2. Domingo Santana doubled and Jonathan Villar walked, chasing Godley.
Tyler Saladino greeted Noel Salas with an RBI single up the middle, and Villar continued around to score when center fielder Chris Owings bobbled the ball.

"My biggest goal today was to come out and pound the zone, and I did the exact opposite," Godley said. "I made some good pitches and they put some really good swings on some good pitches. A couple of balls there in the fourth inning where I threw a pitch, I think it was a curveball way outside that Aguilar hit back up the middle, and then a pitch four inches down below the zone that Shaw hit out. The best I can do there is tip my cap. I just have to pitch better."
Archie Bradley relieved to start the seventh, and Saladino greeted him with his third homer to make it 9-2.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
In the second, the Brewers had runners on first and second with two outs when third baseman Deven Marrero made a diving stop on Aguilar's scorcher and scrambled to the bag for the inning-ending force out.

The D-backs scored four runs on 10 hits in the three-game series at Miller Park. In six games this season against the Brewers, Arizona has scored 10 runs, batting .128 (22-for-172). In this series, the D-backs failed to score against the Brewers' bullpen in 10 1/3 innings.

MITEL REPLAY OF THE DAY
In the Brewers' seven-run fourth, Bandy got a delayed start from on Hernan Perez's fly out to left, but he beat the throw from David Peralta with a headfirst dive into the third. The D-backs challenged, but the call on the field was upheld after a review estimated at one minute and 28 seconds.

UP NEXT
After an off-day, the D-backs open a three-game series at Oakland. Left-hander Patrick Corbin (4-1, 2.60 ERA) starts the 6:35 p.m. MT Interleague opener on Friday. Corbin was 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA in six starts through April, but 0-1 in four starts in May, despite a 3.22 ERA for the month. The A's have yet to name a starter.
