D-backs hold off on Greinke DL decision

Ace right-hander likely to miss next start, return next weekend vs. Giants

June 29th, 2016

PHOENIX -- The D-backs have not decided yet whether to put Zack Greinke on the disabled list, and the right-hander told them he felt better Friday than he did Tuesday when he was removed from his start at the beginning of the third inning.
Greinke was diagnosed at the time with tightness in his left oblique muscle. While he told D-backs manager Chip Hale that he believed he would be healthy enough to start Tuesday against the Padres, Hale told Greinke they would rather he not push it.
So even if Greinke avoids the disabled list, he will more than likely not start Tuesday and instead will pitch one of the final two games the following weekend against the Giants at AT&T Park.
"He feels like he's going to be OK, so we have to keep looking at him and looking at the test results and see how he's doing," Hale said. "I don't see him starting Tuesday. I think that will be a start where we're going to have to come up with somebody."
That would likely be right-hander Zack Godley, who was optioned to Reno on June 24.
The D-backs could use Godley to start Tuesday and then option him back down and bring up an extra reliever for the bullpen.
