BOSTON -- The road woes continue for the Orioles, who, after dropping a 5-0 affair at Fenway Park on Sunday, fell to 1-15 over their last 16 road tilts and 4-19 overall on the road for the season.
One of those four road wins came on Friday in Boston, but that was the only win the team could muster in its four-game set vs. the Red Sox.
David Hess, making his second career start, allowed three home runs in his 4 2/3 innings, including two off the hot stick of J.D. Martinez, who pulled even with teammate Mookie Betts atop the Majors' home run leaderboard with 15.

"He's a pretty astounding guy, sometimes," Hess said of Martinez. "I went back and looked at some film afterwards. What he was able to do with those balls was impressive. I think it's something to put in the memory and move forward from there."
Boston opened things up by batting around in the fifth inning, which saw it drop four runs on Baltimore thanks to two-run home runs from Andrew Benintendi and Martinez.

"They definitely make some adjustments quick and you have to deal just as quick, because that is a lineup from top to bottom that can do damage," said Hess.
In total, Baltimore collected 13 hits, 12 of them singles, with everyone in the starting lineup but Jonathan Schoop chalking up at least one, but only twice did the Orioles have a runner advance past second base.
Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez allowed the O's nine hits on 110 pitches over 5 2/3 innings. He fanned seven and didn't allow a free pass.
"It's hard to get 13 hits and not score any runs," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "We had plenty of opportunities. I thought our guys did a good job off of Eduardo, we just couldn't get that big hit to open him up. That's a tribute to him, but it's frustrating."

"I didn't even notice until the last inning that we had accumulated that many hits," added Trey Mancini, who was 1-for-5 on the day. "That's the first time I can remember not scoring a run with that many hits. A lot of singles spread out and never really got the big hit."
The last team to collect 12 or more singles in a game was the Marlins on the second day of the 2018 season in a 2-1 win over the Cubs.
The last time a team had 13 or more hits and did not score a run was in 2008 when the Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Phillies, 5-0, on Aug. 25, despite 13 hits on the day.

In dropping three of four to the Sox, Baltimore has now lost five consecutive road series, with the Orioles' only series win on the road this year coming back in early April when they took three of four from the Yankees in the Bronx.
Prior to their most recent Fenway Park swing, the O's, who have been outscored 138-83 away from Camden Yards, had been swept in four straight road series, and five times on the season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
After the Red Sox went up, 5-0, in the fifth inning, the Orioles squandered their best chance to chip away at it immediately. In the top of the sixth, Danny Valencia and Joey Rickard had consecutive one-out singles and Craig Gentry loaded the bases up with two outs. They rally was snuffed out when Mancini harmlessly flied out to Betts in right.

Sunday was only the second time in team history that the Orioles had 13 or more hits in a game that they did not score. The last time it occurred was on May 14, 1961, when they lost to Cleveland, 1-0, on a 13-hit day. With Sunday's loss, the Orioles fall to 3-4 in games that they have 13 or more hits this season. For the Red Sox, it was the first time they earned a shutout victory with 13-plus hits against them since 1908.

The Orioles head to Chicago on Monday to continue their season-long 11-game road trip. Right-hander Andrew Cashner, who is 1-5 and has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last six starts, will look to buck a few trends in getting the ball in the series opener vs. the White Sox, who will counter with Hector Santiago. First pitch is slated for 8:10 p.m. ET.
