CHICAGO -- Kevin Gausman threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings and matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts, but the Orioles' bullpen couldn't find a way to finish the job on Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Mychal Givens and Richard Bleier combined to give up three runs in an eighth inning that started with a leadoff triple glancing off the heel of right fielder Mark Trumbo's glove as the Orioles blew a two-run lead in a 3-2 loss to the White Sox.
In the eighth, Trumbo appeared to chase down a Daniel Palka liner into the right-field corner. But the ball hit his glove and rolled away, allowing Palka to end up on third base. By the time the inning was over, the damage had been done.
"I gave it what I had -- that's everything I've got," Trumbo said. "It sure would have been nice to catch it, but that was the best effort I can give."
Manager Buck Showalter added: "It's a tough play. It's one Mark is capable of making, but it's a tough play."

After Welington Castillo got the White Sox to within a run with a broken-bat RBI single that scored Palka, Yoan Moncada delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Castillo. Yolmer Sanchez then came through with a single off of Bleier that produced the go-ahead run. All three runs were charged to Givens, who, on Monday night had been instrumental in allowing the Orioles to win a one-run ballgame.
"He just couldn't get it done," Showalter said. "He was a victim of a little bit of bad luck, too." 
The Orioles threatened in the ninth when they put runners on first and second with one out. But after White Sox closer Nate Jones fell behind Jace Peterson, 3-0, Peterson lined out and Jones struck out Chance Sisco as the Orioles' rally came up short.
The bullpen breakdown came after Gausman didn't allow a run, despite giving up nine hits. Gausman struck out his 10th hitter of the night when he got Moncada to start the seventh inning. His 10 strikeouts matched his performance in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Blue Jays on Sept. 30, 2015.
The Orioles grabbed the lead in the second when Trumbo -- who finished with two doubles and two singles -- delivered an RBI double. Peterson then doubled the Orioles' lead with a groundout that scored Pedro Alvarez, who had walked with one out.

"[Gausman] was solid -- we're just not scoring runs -- that's pretty much the story," Showalter said. "He pitched real well and the margin of error was real fine."
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Escape act: Clinging to a two-run lead, Gausman pitched out of trouble in the sixth inning, when he gave up a leadoff single to Palka and a double to Castillo. But the right-hander bounced back and struck out Leury Garcia, Rondon and Engel to keep the shutout intact.
"Just [had to] bear down," Gausman said. "I knew they were going to be pretty aggressive and I tried to kind of use that to my advantage."

In addition to matching his career-high with strikeouts, Gausman also established a career best in swinging strikes. Of the 10 hitters Gausman fanned, only Garcia went down looking, in the sixth inning.

Right-hander Alex Cobb is coming off his first victory of the season, in which he allowed three runs and 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings last week against the Red Sox. Cobb (1-5, 6.56 ERA) will face Dylan Covey on Wednesday in the third game of the four-game series, which will begin at 8:10 p.m. ET.
