Do-it-all Machado dazzles again in field, at plate

BALTIMORE -- Closing in on 30 home runs, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado continues to quietly have quite the season.

Machado, who has played in all 144 games this season, wasn't the star in the Orioles' 6-5, 13-inning walk-off win as Chris Davis delivered the game-winning single. But he was in the middle of several key plays as has often been the case for the young superstar.

"He's so impactful. We don't take him for granted and I hope nobody does," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said after watching Machado make a pair of fantastic plays early on to help keep starter Ubaldo Jimenez in the game. "It's impactful at third base. Who knows what kind of shortstop he'd be, but he's a difference-maker at third base because of the plays that he makes. And you watch how good his clock has become over there. He knows the runners, he knows when he has to hurry and when he doesn't have to hurry."

Machado also homered in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Baltimore back the lead and his single in the 13th moved Gerardo Parra, who drew a leadoff walk, 90 feet away for Davis. Batting .290 on the season, Machado, who has hit all but one of his homers as a third baseman this season, trails only Tony Batista (30) for the club's single-season record for home runs at the hot corner.

"He's been really good, I feel like, this whole year," Davis said of Machado, who is coming off of consecutive season-ending knee surgeries. "He made a couple of plays the other night [at third base] that I just shook my head at. It seems like some of the plays he makes are so effortless to him; they're such great plays. I feel like he's been swinging the bat well all year."
