CHICAGO -- Orioles right fielder Mark Trumbo missed Wednesday's game against the White Sox with right knee soreness, a day after he went 4-for-4.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that Trumbo believes he may have banged his knee while sliding into second base. Trumbo said he experienced in the soreness and puffiness when he returned to his hotel room and determined he couldn't play in the outfield or even fill the designated hitter's spot. He is considered day to day, but if the condition does not improve by Thursday, Trumbo could have the knee further examined.
In addition to his four hits, Trumbo also was unable to make a catch on a Daniel Palka fly ball that glanced off his glove and went for a triple to lead off the eighth inning. The hit sparked a three-run White Sox rally that negated Kevin Gausman's career-high-tying 10 strikeouts, over 6 2/3 innings.
After Tuesday's loss, Showalter characterized the play in right as tough, but one Trumbo is capable of making.
"I gave it what I had -- that's everything I've got," Trumbo said. "It sure would have been nice to catch it, but that was the best effort I can give."
"Tough play for anybody. … There's probably some faster guys that might have made it a little easier."
On Wednesday, Showalter reiterated how difficult the catch would have been to make and said it wasn't the sole reason for the Orioles' defeat.
"I wouldn't assume anybody else could have made that play," Showalter said. "That's a hard play -- you've got to go a long way. But there's four or five things else that happened during that game, and even in that inning, which could've made it not matter … it's just reality. Our biggest reality is that we're not scoring any runs. We scored two runs again and regardless of anything else that happened, that's kind of glaring."
O'Day misses side session
Orioles reliever Darren O'Day was unable to throw a scheduled bullpen session on Wednesday. O'Day has been on the disabled list since May 6 with a hyperextended right elbow that he injured in a freak incident in the bullpen. Showalter said O'Day did not feel good enough to throw a side session, adding that the issue may force O'Day's elbow to be re-evaluated if it does not improve.
"We'll take it day to day," Showalter said.
