This week's top O's Minor League performers

August 29th, 2021

With the Orioles' Minor League system now ranked No. 1 in baseball by MLB Pipeline, it's time to pay attention.

All summer at MLB.com we’ll be keeping tabs on the top performers from each rung of the Minor League ladder with weekly Sunday roundups. Think of it as a way to track the rebuilding process in real time.

Here are the O’s top Minor League performers, plus some additional news items, from the past week (all stats as of Sunday morning):

Triple-A Norfolk
Pitcher: RHP Mike Baumann
Prospect ranking: No. 10 club

Norfolk’s best start of the week came from Baumann, who now owns a 2.14 ERA across 21 innings (five starts) at Triple-A. The right-hander struck out five over five scoreless innings in Tuesday’s eventual 4-3 loss to Jacksonville, in a game that also featured a scoreless rehab inning from Hunter Harvey and Dean Kremer losing the lead in the late innings. Baumann scattered four hits and walked three, becoming the only Tides starter this week to complete five innings in a start.

Position Player: C Adley Rutschman
Prospect ranking No. 1

Trouble adjusting to a new level? Not for the game’s top overall prospect. Rutschman’s been sizzling since he stepped foot in Triple-A Norfolk and this past week-plus was no different: He’s hitting .351/.455/.486 over his past 10 games, with 21 hits (five extra-base hits) over his first 15 games with Norfolk. He’s also stolen two bases and thrown out two of five would-be base stealers at the level, for a cool 40 percent in a small sample.

Double-A Bowie
Pitcher: RHP Grayson Rodriguez
Prospect ranking: No. 8 overall, No. 2 club

It was a tough week on the pitching side at Bowie, where Top 30 prospects Grayson Rodriguez and Drew Rom were both hit hard in outings. Rodriguez rebounded to strike out nine over five innings in another start, and Zac Lowther threw well on his mid-week rehab assignment. But let’s highlight Kyle Brnovich, one of the right-handers acquired in the Dylan Bundy trade with the Angels in 2019. He’s pitching in relief most days and racking up whiffs: Brnovich struck out 11 over six innings across two appearances this week. The former 8th-round Draft pick has struck out 102 in 76 1/3 innings across two levels this season.

Position Player: OF Kyle Stowers
Prospect ranking: No. 11

Who leads the Orioles system in homers? That would now be Stowers, who leapfrogged Rutschman by socking three this week, including two in Thursday’s 8-6 win over the Erie SeaWolves. It’s been a meteoric year for Stowers, the Orioles’ third-round Draft pick out of Stanford in 2019, after struggling to hit consistently in his Draft year. The left-handed-hitting outfielder puts up some of the best exit velocity numbers in the Orioles’ system, and is hitting .280/.373/.528 with 13 homers in his first run with Bowie. Said one rival scout this week: “He has a chance to be better than the industry consensus seemed to be entering this year.”

Class A Advanced Aberdeen
Pitcher: RHP Zach Peek
Prospect ranking: Unranked

The Ironbirds' best start of the week came from Peek, who logged five innings of one-run ball in their 2-1 win over Brooklyn on Wednesday, striking out seven without a walk. The 23-year-old seems to have taken a step forward with his recent promotion to Aberdeen, logging a 3.91 ERA over his first six outings (four starts). His strikeout-to-walk ratio is 32-5 in 5 1/3 innings at the level.

Position Player: OF Doran Turchin
Prospect ranking: Unranked

The Orioles' system suffered a blow this week when No. 16 prospect Hudson Haskin fractured his right thumb. The injury ended a productive first season in pro ball for Haskin, who hit .274/.379/.404 with five home runs and 22 steals in 82 games between Class A Delmarva and Aberdeen. Turchin was summoned to fill the gap at Aberdeen and immediately produced, hitting safely in six of his first eight games and collecting multi-hit games in three. He homered and drove in three Thursday at Brooklyn to pace one of the IronBirds' two wins this week.

Class A Delmarva
Pitcher: RHP Jake Lyons
Prospect ranking: Unranked

A former 22nd-round Draft pick, the 23-year-old Lyons twirled his best outing of the year last Friday against Fredericksburg, logging six innings of one-run ball behind a bevy of run support. Then he followed that up with a five-inning one-hit performance Thursday against Salem, striking out six in Delmarva’s 6-3 win. Lyons is 4-3 with a 3.66 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 18 games (10 starts) this season at Delmarva.

Position Player: 2B Connor Norby
Prospect ranking No. 9 club

Of all the 2021 Draft picks finding early success at Delmarva these days, the most productive is Norby, the Orioles’ second-rounder out of East Carolina. Hitting .300/.405/.567 with one homer and eight RBIs over the past 10 days, Norby owns a better recent OPS (.972) than Colton Cowser (.871), Coby Mayo (.879) and other Top 30 guys. Norby enjoyed a three-hit day Tuesday against Salem, and scored thrice and drove in two runs in Sunday’s 10-2 rout over Fredericksburg.
