Dickerson promoted to third-base coach
Dickerson, with longstanding ties to Baltimore manager Buck Showalter, has spent the past three seasons as the Orioles' Minor League infield coordinator, joining the big league club along with the September callups. The 47-year-old will continue to work with infielders in his new role.
"It's just an honor," said Dickerson, who found out after Showalter made sure his wife and children were present. "I'm like a lot of guys in the Minor Leagues, I've paid my dues, I've tried to do the rest way the best I could. It's really an honor to be considered first in the group of people that were also being considered. And to be chosen, it's a very nice gesture.
"It's going to be a big responsibility, but I'm ready for it."
Dickerson has coached and managed in the Minors for the last 20 years, working for the Orioles, D-backs and Cubs. He compiled a 568-508 record (.528 winning percentage) in 10 seasons as a skipper and third-base coach, which included rookie-level Appalachian League championships for the Orioles' Bluefield affiliate in 1996 and '97."Bobby has been in this organization for eight years as a coach and three as a player, and he is regarded as one of the best infield instructors in the game," said Showalter, who managed Dickerson in the Yankees organization from 1987-88. "Bobby's been with our Major League club the last two Septembers and during Spring Training, so he is familiar with our personnel. He has experience in Latin America, and has been around a lot of winning teams. It is also great to be able to promote from within the organization."Dickerson played seven seasons in the Minors for the Orioles and Yankees, who drafted him in 1987. He finished his playing career with Rochester, Baltimore's Triple-A affiliate in 1993.
