The Orioles today announced the coaching staffs for their seven minor league affiliates for the 2017 season.
BRIAN GRAHAM enters his 10th season with the Orioles and fifth as Director of Player Development. JOHN WASDIN joins the Orioles in his first season as Minor League Pitching Coordinator. He was previously a pitching coach in the Oakland organization for six seasons, including the 2015-16 seasons with Double-A Midland.Wasdin pitched in 26 games for the Orioles in 2001.
RON JOHNSON returns for his sixth season as manager at Triple-A Norfolk. The 2017 season will be his 24th as a minor league manager. In 2015, he guided the Tides to the International League South Division title and earned International League Manager of the Year honors. Johnson, the winningest manager in Tides franchise history (with 356 wins), has compiled 1,617 career victories. MIKE GRIFFIN will serve as Pitching Coach for the ninth straight season with Norfolk (10thconsecutive season in the organization). SEAN BERRY will serve as Hitting Coach for the Tides in his third season. JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ, who played 15 years in the majors,will serve as Field Coach/Third Base Coach for Norfolk, his fifth consecutive season with the Tides (eighth year in the organization). MARK SHIRES will serve his 19th year as an Athletic Trainer in the Orioles' system and his 11th year with the Tides.TREVOR HOWELL returns for his sixth season in the Orioles' organization and fourth as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for Norfolk.
GARY KENDALL enters his seventh season as manager at Double-A Bowie. In 2015, he led the club to its first Eastern League Championship. This season marks Kendall's 18th in the organization. KENNIE STEENSTRA, who served as Pitching Coach for Frederick in 2009 and from 2013-16, returns for his fourth season as Pitching Coach for the Baysox after previously serving in the same role from 2010-12. It will be his 13th year in the organization. BUTCH DAVIS returns to the Orioles organization after spending the previous two seasons as First Base Coach for the Minnesota Twins. He enters his first season as Hitting Coach with Bowie, where he previously coached in 2000, 2003-05, and 2013-14. PAT WESLEY begins his third season as an Athletic Trainer for the Baysox. Strength and Conditioning Coach PAT ARMSTRONG returns for his eighth year in the organization and sixth year at Bowie.
KEITH BODIE, who served as a coach with the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League in 2016, returns for his second season as manager at Class A-Advanced Frederick. It will be his 20th year as a manager. BLAINE BEATTY will serve as Pitching Coach for the Keys after spending the 2015-16 seasons with Class-A Delmarva as Pitching Coach. He returns for his 12th season in the organization and seventh at Frederick, as he previously served in the same role for the Keys from 2006-08 and 2010-12. Former Orioles farmhand KYLE MOORE enters his first season as Frederick's Hitting Coach after serving in the same capacity for Delmarva last season. SHAWN McGILL will serve as Third Base Coach for the Keys after spending 2016 with Bowie as Field Coach. BRIAN GUZMAN will serve as the Athletic Trainer with Frederick for the third straight season.
Former Orioles third baseman RYAN MINOR will manage the Shorebirds for the fourth straight season. The 2017 season will be Minor's 10th as a coach or manager in the Orioles organization. Minor will be joined by JUSTIN LORD, who will begin his second season at Delmarva as Pitching Coach (also 2013) after serving in the same capacity for Aberdeen from 2014-16. Lord coached alongside Frederick manager Keith Bodie in 2016 with the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.BUCK BRITTON, the older brother of Orioles LHP ZACH BRITTON, enters his first season as Hitting Coach for the Shorebirds. A former Orioles farmhand, Britton was selected by the Orioles in the 35th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. MARTY BRINKER enters his first season as the Athletic Trainer with Delmarva after serving in the same role the previous two seasons with Aberdeen.
KEVIN BRADSHAW enters his second season as manager of the Aberdeen IronBirds. MARK HENDRICKSON, a former Major League pitcher of 10 seasons, including three with the Orioles from 2009-11, will begin his first season as Pitching Coach at Aberdeen. RAMON SAMBO, who was a Field Coach with Frederick last year, will serve as Field Coach for Aberdeen (11th overall year in the Orioles system).ADRIAN GONZALEZ enters his first season as Athletic Trainer for the IronBirds after serving as Athletic Trainer for the GCL Orioles in 2015-16.
CARLOS TOSCA enters his first season as manager of the Gulf Coast League Orioles after spending the previous 12 seasons as a bench coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-06), Florida Marlins (2007-10), and Atlanta Braves (2011-16). Former Major Leaguer WILSON ALVAREZ returns for a fifth season as Pitching Coach for the GCL Orioles. MILT MAY will begin his eighth season as Hitting Coach for the GCL Orioles. GARY SMITH enters his first season as Athletic Trainer for the GCL Orioles.
ELVIS MOREL will manage the Dominican Summer League Orioles. He will be assisted by Pitching Coach DIONIS PASCUAL and coaches BENNY ADAMES(outfield), RAMÓN CARABALLO (hitting), RUBÉN FRANCISCO (first base/baserunning), MIGUEL JABALERA (field coordinator), RAMÓN LUBO (third base/catching), and ROBERT PÉREZ (bullpen). LUDOVINO ALONZO will serve as Athletic Trainer for the DSL club, while ANTHONY ADAMES will serve as Strength and Conditioning Coach.
JEFF MANTO returns for his fourth year as Minor League Hitting Coordinator.DON WERNER will serve as the Minor League Catching Coordinator, while DAVE ANDERSON will serve as the Minor League Infield Coordinator. SCOTT McGREGORenters his sixth season as the Sarasota-based Pitching Rehabilitation Coordinator.DAVE SCHMIDT, in his 20th season in the organization, will serve as the Florida and Latin America Pitching Coordinator for the Orioles. NELSON NORMAN remains the Director of Dominican Baseball Operations for the Orioles, while FELIPE ROJAS ALOU, JR. returns to serve as Director of the Dominican Academy. LEN JOHNSTONenters his 41st season with the Orioles organization, serving as the Administrator of Sarasota Operations. DAVE WALKER will begin his 15th year as Minor League Medical Coordinator and 24th season in the Orioles' farm system. RYAN DRISCOLLreturns as Sarasota Strength and Conditioning Coordinator.
