Night after thumping, Orioles held in check

Hyde's first ejection of 2020 'the weirdest' he's been a part of

What a difference a day makes for the Orioles. On Monday night, they scored a season-high 14 runs. It was a different story on Tuesday night, as they were stymied by the Braves, 5-1, at Camden Yards. The Orioles dropped their record to 21-27 and slipped further behind the Yankees and Indians in the Wild Card race.

The Braves needed six pitchers -- Huascar Ynoa, Darren O’Day, Will Smith, Chris Martin, Shane Greene and Mark Melancon -- to hold Baltimore in check. The Orioles struck out nine times and collected four hits, two of which came off the bat of shortstop . He was in scoring position twice in the game with less than two outs, but he was left stranded. Iglesias also drove in the O's only run of the game when he grounded out in the ninth inning, with Cedric Mullins racing home from third.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde gave credit to the Braves' pitchers for keeping his players off the bases.

“We faced different pitchers. So we really faced their go-to guys that have really locked teams up all year long,” Hyde said. "... They have multiple back-end-of-the-bullpen guys they can use at any time. They can match up with you well. They have been doing that all season long.

“It’s a nice formula that they have. They have a starter that can give you some innings, and then they have a bullpen that doesn’t allow many runs or baserunners.”

Right-hander was given a spot start for the Orioles, and he wasn’t able to shut down the Braves in 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on 67 pitches. Ozzie Albies scored the first run of the game on an RBI double by Freddie Freeman in the third inning. With one out in the ensuing frame, Adam Duvall hit a home run into the left-field seats to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead.

Eshelman was taken out of the game after allowing a single to Austin Riley an at-bat later.

“We were trying to get four innings out of Tom because he was on three days’ rest,” Hyde said. “It was kind of a spot start. He almost got there. He only gave up a couple of runs and kept us in the game.”

It was also a game that saw Hyde get ejected in the top of the fourth inning by first-base umpire Brennan Miller for arguing balls and strikes. Hyde thought Ronald Acuña Jr. swung at a ball in the dirt, but the Miller ruled that Acuña checked his swing.

“It was pretty quick for sure,” Hyde said about the ejection. “We had some disagreements on a few checked swings. I guess he didn’t like what I said out of the dugout on the third checked swing that we disagreed with. It was a pretty quick hook, but it’s so quiet out there. It was definitely the weirdest ejection I’ve ever been a part of.”

The Braves put the game out of reach by scoring three more runs off . Freeman highlighted the scoring with an RBI double to cap a three-hit night.
