Despite the late addition, the transition process should be fairly easy for Alvarez, who is good friends with O's infielder Ryan Flaherty.
The 29-year-old Alvarez spent the first six seasons of his big league career with the Pirates, who have their spring home in neighboring Bradenton, Fla.. He hit .243/.320/.469 with 27 homers in 150 games with Pittsburgh last season.
The second overall selection in the 2008 Draft, Alvarez was named to the All-Star Game in 2013. With Baltimore, he's projected to primarily serve as a designated hitter, though he could also play some first base.
The Orioles released right-hander Andrew Triggs to make room for Alvarez on the 40-man roster.
