Snyder, Clevenger called up to help back Wieters

CLEVELAND -- The Orioles added a pair of catchers on Sunday in New York, with Chris Snyder and Steve Clevenger both joining the club right before the Orioles' series finale against the Yankees.

The duo, promoted from Triple-A Norfolk, will help spell starter Matt Wieters and are part of the gradual September roster expansion the Orioles hope will fuel a trip to the postseason.

"When you come to a new organization, you want to give a good impression, a good first impression," said Clevenger, who was acquired from the Cubs in July's trade for starter Scott Feldman. "Obviously, you want to play well up here, but the goal is for the team to make the playoffs. [I'll] do what I got to do to contribute and help this team make the playoffs."

Clevenger is a native of Baltimore and grew up a few miles from the stadium as a big Orioles fan. The left-handed hitter has missed most of the season with a nagging oblique injury, returning about a month ago, and said it was a process to get his timing back at the plate. Snyder, who was designated earlier this season, but opted to remain in the organization, has been the primary catcher for Triple-A Norfolk and the veteran has received favorable reports.

"That's always been my main focus my entire career, what I do defensively and how I handle the pitchers," Snyder said. "That still will continue to be my main focus."
