Notes: Lowther recalled; Means honored

May 9th, 2021

The Orioles recalled lefty from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday to make his first career start. The Orioles' No. 11 prospect faced a talented Red Sox lineup at Oriole Park.

Lowther struggled in an 11-6 loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

Lowther turned heads when he pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a 8-1 win over the Athletics on April 25. Lowther has spent most of his time this season at the alternate site, but despite Major League reps, the 2017 second-round Draft pick out of Xavier University is not short on confidence.

“What I liked about Zac that first appearance in Oakland was I gave him a little bit of time to get ready, but he didn't have that deer-in-the-headlights look. He looked like he was ready to go,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde.

Lowther primarily relies on three pitches and has always been successful with his command of his four-seam fastball, which opens up his changeup. Hyde even went on to state how his command of the baseball and ability to pitch on both sides of the plate are the reasons why Lowther got the start. Hyde was excited to see how Lowther performed in his first start and hoped he would bring back the same intensity he saw from him in Oakland.

“I'm going to let him go. He’s built up and ready to pitch. Looking forward to watching his first Major League start, encouraged by the inning he threw against Oakland and he's always had really good command,” said Hyde before the game. “Hopefully, he has his fastball command tonight, utilizes that good changeup and breaking ball.”

No-no notice

In recognition of John Means’ no-hitter on Wednesday against the Mariners, the Orioles made a special presentation to their ace on the field before Saturday's game.

The lefty was also commemorated on Saturday at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where his cap and ball from that game will be displayed. After 52 long years without a solo no-hitter, Baltimore fans are relishing every moment of Means’ historic feat.

Roster moves

The Orioles claimed left-handed pitcher Brandon Waddell off waivers from the Twins and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk. In addition, Jay Flaa was designated for assignment. With those moves the Orioles have officially maxed out the 40-man roster.
