Benches clear in second inning of Wednesday's finale

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jesus Guzman admitted to being very upset Wednesday when Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner threw a pitch behind him in the second inning at AT&T Park.

But by the end of the game, and after he hit a home run off Bumgarner in the seventh inning, the Padres first baseman said he was ready to move on.

"It's part of the game," Guzman said. "I will forget it."

The Giants defeated the Padres, 4-2.

There was an implication that the Giants were upset that Guzman showed emotion a day earlier after he hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the eighth inning in a game the Giants eventually won.

"I was enjoying the home run with my teammates," Guzman said. "I wasn't trying to be disrespectful of their team."

San Diego manager Bud Black didn't understand why Bumgarner fired a pitch -- the first pitch of the at-bat -- behind Guzman.

"I have no idea where that came from," Black said. "That was uncalled for, I thought. I didn't get it."

And if Bumgarner opted to throw behind Guzman because the Giants didn't like how he celebrated after his home run?

"If it was … Bumgarner shouldn't have done it," Black said. "Guzman was showing emotion like so many other players in our game do. He was emotional. It was a key part of the game in a key series."

Bumgarner declined to comment on the pitch to Guzman and the ensuing bench-clearing incident.

"There's no need to comment on that. No need to," he said.

Guzman took a couple steps toward the mound and also pointed the bat toward Bumgarner while also yelling in his direction. San Francisco catcher Buster Posey intervened, standing between Guzman and Bumgarner.

"We were just trying to get inside to a guy that's hurt us over the plate before," Posey said.

The benches cleared but the two teams dispersed quickly with no ejections issued. Play resumed in fewer than five minutes.

Warnings were issued to both sides.

"These things happen. They're part of baseball," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy.
