Street thows in 'pen, close to rehab stint

CHICAGO -- Closer Huston Street took another significant step toward returning from the disabled list on Wednesday when he threw a bullpen session at Wrigley Field.

If Street -- on the disabled list since May 5 with a strained right lat muscle -- feels fine Thursday, and the Padres expect he will, he will begin a rehabilitation stint with Class A Lake Elsinore on Friday.

Street threw a bullpen session on Sunday in New York, but Wednesday's workout was more intense, said manager Bud Black.

"He'll throw all his pitches at a high intensity to prepare for a game," Black said before Street's session.

Street had a 0.93 ERA in 10 games, with four saves in four opportunities, before landing on the disabled list. Dale Thayer, his replacement, has successfully converted all five of his save opportunities.
