Padres reinstate five from DL, designate pair

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres tidied up their 40-man roster on Friday when they reinstated five players from the 60-day disabled list and designated two players for assignment.

The Padres reinstated pitchers Cory Luebke and Joe Wieland, catcher Nick Hundley and infielder/outfielders James Darnell and Kyle Blanks from the 60-day DL.

The team also designated for assignment left-handed pitcher Josh Spence and outfielder Blake Tekotte.

The Padres now have a full 40-man roster. They have until Nov. 20 to make subtractions and additions in advance of the Rule 5 Draft during the Winter Meetings in Nashville on Dec. 6.

Luebke was 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA last season before landing on the disabled list with a strained left elbow. He later needed Tommy John surgery on May 23.

Wieland made his Major League debut for the Padres in 2012, going 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA in five starts before he went on the disabled list with a strained right elbow. Like Luebke, Wieland needed Tommy John surgery, and underwent the procedure in July.

Hundley, the Padres' starting catcher on Opening Day, hit .157 before being optioned to Triple-A Tucson on June 30. He was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 17 with a right knee bruise that led to arthroscopic surgery on Aug. 29.

Blanks played in four games with the Padres last season before landing on the disabled list April 14 with a strained left shoulder. On May 2, he had season-ending arthroscopic surgery.

Darnell hit .235 in seven games for the Padres after beginning the season with Tucson. He went on the disabled list on May 18 with a subluxation of his left shoulder and had arthroscopic surgery on Aug. 29.

Spence was 0-3 with a 3.15 ERA over 40 innings with the Padres in 2011-12. He was selected in the ninth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. He spent most of last season with Tucson, posting a 4.20 ERA over 31 games.

Tekotte hit .163 in 49 at-bats over parts of two seasons with the Padres. He was a third-round pick in the 2008 Draft. He spent all of last season with Tucson, hitting .243 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs.
