Padres invite 21 non-roster players to camp

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres announced on Monday that they have extended Major League Spring Training invitations to 21 players.

The list of non-roster invitees includes 12 pitchers -- 11 right-handers, one left-hander -- four infielders, one outfielder and four catchers.

The list of players is longer than it has been in past years, but the Padres are also playing a club-record 37 exhibition games and the team will need additional players, especially pitchers, for reinforcements.

"I think it will be a challenge," Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said Monday. "It's a lot of games to get ready to play 162 [games]."

The pitchers include right-handers Johnny Barbato, Wilfredo Boscan, Brandon Kloess, Sean O'Sullivan, Kevin Quackenbush, Jason Ray, Donn Roach, Daniel Stange, Matt Stites, Jerry Sullivan and Thad Weber. The lone left-hander is Robbie Erlin.

The infielders are Jonathan Galvez, Jedd Gyorko, Gregorio Petit and Cody Ransom. The catchers invited to are Jason Hagerty, Austin Hedges, Rene Rivera and Eddy Rodriguez. Travis Buck is the lone outfielder among the 21 players invited to camp.

The Padres will get a chance to look at several notable newcomers to the organization, such as Boscan and Kloess, in addition to prospects such as Roach, Quackenbush, Stites, Galvez, Gyorko and Hedges.

"You want guys in Major League camp who have earned it," Byrnes said. "And with the prospects, it's a good opportunity for them."

The Padres will have a total of 63 players in camp for Spring Training -- the full 40-man roster, the 21 players who were invited on Monday and two players from the restricted list -- catcher Yasmani Grandal and pitcher Jose De Paula.

Pitchers and catchers report to the team's Spring Training facility in Peoria, Ariz., on Feb. 12. Position players report on Feb. 15, with the first full-squad workout set for the following day.

The first exhibition game is set for Feb. 22 in Peoria when the Padres face the Mariners in their annual charity game at the Peoria Sports Complex.
