San Diego Padres and Xolos de Tijuana announce San Diego Clásico Soccer Exhibition Match at Petco Park

Xolos will play Club América on July 6 at 7:30 p.m.

The San Diego Padres and Xolos de Tijuana of Liga MX have announced the 2013 San Diego Clásico featuring the Xolos against Club América to be played at San Diego's Petco Park on Saturday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. Padres players Yonder Alonso, Everth Cabrera and Jesus Guzman, bench coach Rick Renteria, Senior VP-Business Development Tyler Epp, broadcaster Eduardo Ortega along with Xolos players including San Diego native Joe Corona made the announcement today on the field at Petco Park. More information including how to purchase tickets will be released at a later date.

The two clubs met once before in last year's Clásico on June 30, 2012 at Qualcomm Stadium, playing to a 1-1 draw. This will be the Xolos fourth-ever appearance in the San Diego Clásico which includes a March 2011 match vs. the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS and a February 2012 contest vs. Chivas USA.

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente, commonly referred to as Xolos de Tijuana or simply Xolos, was founded in January of 2007 and joined Liga MX, Mexico's top soccer division, in 2011. The Xolos are reigning league champions, having won the Apertura 2012 title last December, the league's fall tournament. The club is currently competing in the Copa Libertadores, the most prestigious club competition in South America. The Xolos feature Tijuana-born Fernando Arce and San Diegan, Sweetwater High and San Diego State alum Joe Corona, both of whom were in attendance today at Petco Park along with defender Greg Garza.

América is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in Mexican soccer history. Founded in 1916 and playing their home contests in famed Estadio Azteca, América has won ten domestic national titles and added eight FIFA recognized club trophies. With two matches remaining in the 2012-13 season, América, led by league top scorer Christian Benitez, currently sits just three points shy of the top of the Liga MX table entering play today.

The Xolos and América match will be the third soccer event contested at Petco Park. In 2005, the park hosted an international match between Mexico and Sweden, drawing a crowd of more than 30,000. The 'ChivaClásico', an exhibition between Chivas USA and Chivas de Guadalajara, was played in 2010 in front of 23,216 fans.
