Padres recall Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson; Place Jason Marquis on 15-day Disabled List

The San Diego Padres today announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson and have placed right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 20, with a right elbow strain. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Mikolas, 24, is making his third stint with the Padres this season and will be available for the San Diego's 1:15 pm CT game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium this afternoon. The Jupiter, Florida native was last recalled by the Padres on July 9 and made his only appearance of the season on July 11, pitching a scoreless ninth inning at home against San Francisco before being optioned back to Tucson the following day. He was recalled for the first time this season on June 23, but did not make an appearance before being optioned back to Tucson the following day. In 41 games for Tucson this year, he has gone 3-1 with 20 saves, a 2.91 ERA (15 ER, 46.1 IP) and 28 strikeouts against 14 walks The right-hander made his Major League debut for the Padres last season, going 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA (13 ER, 32.1 IP) and 23 strikeouts against 15 walks in 25 relief appearances. Mikolas was originally selected by the Padres in the seventh-round of the 2009 draft out of Nova Southeastern University (FL).

Marquis, 34, has pitched to a 9-5 record with a 4.05 ERA (53 ER, 117.2 IP) with 72 strikeouts against 68 walks in 20 starts this season for the Padres. Over 14 Major League seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2000-03), St. Louis Cardinals (2004-06), Chicago Cubs (2007-08), Colorado Rockies (2009), Washington Nationals (2010-11), Arizona Diamondbacks (2011), Minnesota Twins (2012) and Padres (2012-13), the right-hander has posted a career 121-114 record with a 4.56 ERA (974 ER, 1,921.0 IP) with 1,137 strikeouts against 755 walks in 368 games, 309 of them starts.
