Padres reinstate Shortstop Everth Cabrera; Catcher Chris Robinson designated for assignment

The San Diego Padres today announced that they have reinstated shortstop Everth Cabrera from the restricted list. To make room on the Major League 40-man roster, catcher Chris Robinson has been designated for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Cabrera, 26, made his first All-Star team in 2013, representing the Padres in New York. He appeared in 95 games, hitting .283 (108-for-381) with 54 runs, 15 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 31 RBI and 37 stolen bases. At the time of his last game he was leading the National League in stolen bases and was amongst shortstop leaders in runs, hits and triples. He has spent parts of the last five seasons with the Padres, hitting .252 (347-for-1376) with 185 runs, 58 doubles, 19 triples, nine home runs, 108 RBI and 118 stolen bases in 391 games.

Robinson, 29, appeared in eight games with the Padres this season, hitting .167 (2-for-12) with a run, a home run and three RBI. He appeared in two games behind the plate, making one start on September 28th against the Giants. He made his big league debut on September 4 against the Giants with a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth. On September 25th, he hit a pinch-hit three run home run, becoming the third Padre this season to homer for his first career hit, joining Jaff Decker on August 12 at Colorado and Tommy Medica on September 11 at Philadelphia. Robinson was selected from Triple-A Tucson on August 15th for his first career Major League stint but did not appear in a game before being optioned on August 17.

In 39 games for Triple-A Tucson this year, he has hit .316 (42-for-133) with five doubles, 17 RBI and 20 runs scored after being acquired by the Padres from the Baltimore Orioles organization on June 20 in exchange for cash considerations. In 29 games for Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles organization this season, Robinson hit .241 (26-for-108) with four doubles, five RBI and nine runs scored. The right-handed hitter was originally signed as a third-round selection by the Detroit Tigers in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Illinois. Over parts of nine professional seasons in the Tigers (2005-06), Chicago Cubs (2006-11), Orioles (2012-13) and Padres (2013) organizations, he has hit .276 (596-for-2365) with 121 doubles, seven triples, 12 home runs, 267 RBI and 217 runs scored in 634 games played.
