Padres announce roster moves

The San Diego Padres today announced that right-handed pitcher Casey Kelly and catcher Yasmani Grandal have been reinstated from the 60-day disabled list, right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis has been reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and declared free agency, infielder Ronny Cedeno and infielder/outfielder Mark Kotsay have declared free agency and left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne has been outrighted to the club's Triple-A affiliate.

Kotsay, 37, announced his retirement from Major League Baseball following the 2013 season this past September. Over 104 games in 2013, he hit .194 (30-for-155), leading all of Major League Baseball with 72 pinch-hit appearances. A veteran of 17 Major League seasons with the Florida Marlins (1997-2000), Padres (2001-03, 2012-13), Oakland Athletics (2004-07), Atlanta Braves (2008), Boston Red Sox (2008-09), Chicago White Sox (2009-10) and Milwaukee Brewers (2011), Kotsay hit .276 (1784-for-6464) with 353 doubles, 48 triples, 127 home runs, 720 RBI, 790 runs scored and 98 stolen bases in 1914 games played.

Kelly, 24, missed the entire 2013 while recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The right-hander underwent surgery on his right elbow on April 2. He made his Major League debut for the Padres in 2012, making six starts for San Diego and going 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA (20 ER, 29.0 IP).

Grandal, 24, played in 28 games for the Padres in 2013, hitting .216 (19-for-88) before being placed on the 60-day disabled list on July 7 with a right knee injury. The switch-hitter underwent reconstructive surgery on his right ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in his knee on August 6, missing the reminder of the season.

Marquis, 35, made 20 starts for the Padres in 2013, going 9-5 with a 4.05 ERA (53 ER, 117.2 IP) before being placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 21 with a strained right elbow. The right-hander was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on August 15 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. A veteran of 13 Major League seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2000-03), St. Louis Cardinals (2004-06), Chicago Cubs (2007-08), Colorado Rockies (2009), Washington Nationals (2010-11), Arizona Diamondbacks (2011), Minnesota Twins (2012) and Padres (2012-13), Marquis has gone 121-114 with a 4.56 ERA (974 ER, 1921.0 IP) over 368 games, 309 starts.

Cedeno, 30, was signed by the Padres to a minor league contract on August 2 and later selected from Lake Elsinore on August 6. The infielder played in 38 games for San Diego, hitting .268 (33-for-123). He began the season with the Houston Astros, playing in 51 games, before being designated for assignment on July 22. Over parts of nine Major League campaigns with the Chicago Cubs (2005-08), Seattle Mariners (2009), Pittsburgh Pirates (2009-11), New York Mets (2012), Astros (2013) and Padres (2013), he has hit .246 (629-for-2556) with 116 doubles, 20 triples, 40 home runs, 239 RBI, 265 runs scored and 39 stolen bases in 868 games played.

Layne, 29, split the 2013 season between the Padres and Triple-A Tucson. In 14 games for San Diego, he went 0-2 with a 2.08 ERA (2 ER, 8.2 IP). Over 49 relief appearances for Tucson, he went 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA (23 ER, 46.0 IP) and 41 strikeouts against 27 walks. The left-hander was designated for assignment on October 25. Over parts of two big league campaigns with the Padres (2012-13), Layne has gone 2-2 with two saves and a 2.84 ERA (8 ER, 25.1 IP) in 40 relief appearances.
