Padres, Wieland agree to one-year deal

The Padres have avoided arbitration with right-hander Joe Wieland as the two sides agreed Saturday to a one-year contract worth $590,000, according to ESPN. The Padres have not confirmed the signing.

Wieland, 24, has only pitched 39 innings in the Majors. He made five starts for San Diego in 2012 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. The rehab process kept Wieland off the big league mound until Sept. 6, when he made his first start in 28 months.

Wieland took the mound four times last season -- two starts and two relief appearances -- and posted a 7.15 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. The Padres acquired him along with left-hander Robbie Erlin in exchange for reliever Mike Adams in 2011. In six Minor League seasons, Wieland went 35-22 with a 3.27 ERA.

Despite his limited Major League experience, Wieland qualified for salary arbitration because his extended stint on the disabled list gave him enough service time to qualify as a Super Two player. Wieland is under team control through the end of the 2018 season.
