Padres option Lucchesi, open rotation spot

August 7th, 2020

SAN DIEGO -- ’s rotation spot is up for grabs.

The Padres optioned Lucchesi and outfielder Josh Naylor to their alternate training site at the University of San Diego on Thursday as rosters decreased from 30 players to 28. Lucchesi’s rotation status has hung in the balance since the Padres decided to skip his start because of Thursday’s off-day.

With Zach Davies slated to start against the D-backs on Friday, it seems likely the Padres will turn over their rotation on Saturday, with Chris Paddack available on normal rest. That could leave Dinelson Lamet to start on Sunday and Garrett Richards to take the ball for Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Tuesday’s start? That’s anyone’s guess. The Padres recently promoted Luis Patiño, MLB Pipeline’s No. 29 overall prospect and a standout during Summer Camp. Patiño made his debut out of the bullpen on Wednesday, but he’s an obvious starting option. So is fellow righty Cal Quantrill, who served as the second half of a piggyback with Lucchesi in his two appearances this season. But the Padres might also get creative, and manager Jayce Tingler has mentioned the possibility of using openers and bullpen days to fill a spot in the rotation.

In two starts this season, Lucchesi struggled, pitching only 5 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on 11 hits. Naylor, meanwhile, started the year 3-for-13. But the Padres have used their DH spot mostly as a revolving door for their infielders, and there isn’t much playing time available in the outfield, especially considering Naylor’s defensive limitations.
