Padres recall RHP Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson; place RHP Sean O'Sullivan on paternity leave

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson and have placed right-handed pitcher Sean O'Sullivan on paternity leave. The club also announced that outfielder Cameron Maybin is set begin a rehabilitation assignment with the same Tucson club tonight. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Mikolas, 24, is making his fourth stint with the Padres this season. The Jupiter, Fla. native was last recalled by the Padres on July 21 but did not make an appearance before being optioned back to Triple-A Tucson the following day. The right-hander made his only Major League appearance of the season during his second Big League stint on July 11, pitching a scoreless ninth inning at home against San Francisco before being optioned back to Tucson the following day. He was recalled for the first time this season on June 23 but did not make an appearance before being optioned back to Tucson the following day. In 44 games for Tucson this year, he has gone 3-1 with 21 saves, a 2.86 ERA (16 ER, 50.1 IP) and 33 strikeouts against 15 walks. Mikolas made his Major League debut for the Padres last season, going 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA (13 ER, 32.1 IP) and 23 strikeouts against 15 walks in 25 relief appearances.

O'Sullivan, 25, made the start for the Padres last night in their 2-1 victory over the Reds at Petco Park. He and his wife, Sabrina, are expecting the birth of their first born child. The right-hander is eligible to return as early as tomorrow and as late as Friday, August 2. In four appearances this season (three starts), he has gone 0-2 with a 5.92 ERA (8 ER, 19.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts against 12 walks.

Maybin, 26, will report to Triple-A Tucson tonight to begin a rehabilitation assignment. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 12, retroactive to June 10, with a strained left knee. The Asheville, N.C. native owns a .157 batting average (8-for-51) with one double, one home run and five RBI in 14 games with San Diego this season, but was hitting .278 (5-for-18) with a home run and four RBI in four games after being activated from the 15-day disabled list with a right wrist impingement on June 6.
