Padres Recall RHP Burch Smith from Triple-A Tucson

MIAMI, Fla. - The San Diego Padres today announced they have recalled right-handed pitcher Burch Smith from Triple-A Tucson and optioned left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne to the same Tucson club post-game on Wednesday, June 26. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Smith, 23, is making his third stint with the Padres this season. The right-hander was previously recalled for his second Major League stint on June 8, but did not make an appearance before being optioned back to Tucson on June 10. He was first selected from Tucson on May 11 and made three starts for the Padres, pitching to a 0-1 record with an 18.41 ERA (15 ER, 7.1 IP) with 11 strikeouts before being optioned back to Triple-A on May 22. The San Antonio, TX native has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.54 ERA (8 ER, 28.1) with 26 strikeouts against eight walks in five starts with Tucson since May 28. He began the season with Double-A San Antonio where he was named the Padres Minor League Pitcher of the Month in April when he was 1-2 with a 1.38 ERA (4 ER, 26.0 IP) over five starts before being promoted to the Majors. In his minor league career, he is 13-9 with a 3.22 ERA (68 ER, 190.0 IP) with 204 strikeouts in 39 appearances including 37 starts. He was originally selected by the Padres in the 14th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.

Layne, 28, was recalled from Tucson on June 24 for his third stint with the Padres and was optioned to Tucson following Wednesday night's game against Philadelphia. In nine games for San Diego this season, he is 0-2 with a 2.45 ERA (2 ER, 7.1 IP) with six strikeouts against two walks. In 24 appearances for Tucson this season, he is 1-3 with a 4.03 ERA (10 ER, 22.1 IP) with 16 strikeouts against 14 walks.
