Padres reinstate right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland and left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke from 60-day disabled list
Left-handed Pitchers Tommy Layne and Colt Hynes have been designated for assignment
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have reinstated right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland and left-handed pitcherCory Luebke from the 60-day disabled list. To make room on the Major League 40-man roster, left-handed pitchersTommy Layne and Colt Hynes have been designated for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Wieland, 23, missed the entire 2013 season recovering from Tommy John surgery (July 2012). He was placed on the 60-day disabled list on March 28 and did not pitch in a competitive game. He posted a 4.55 ERA (14 ER, 27.2 IP) with 24 strikeouts in 2012.
Luebke, 28, missed the entire 2013 season recovering from Tommy John surgery (May 23, 2012). He was placed on the 60-day disabled list on March 30 and did not pitch in a competitive game. He posted a 2.61 ERA (9 ER, 31.0 IP) with 23 strikeouts in 2012.
Layne, 28, split the season between Triple-A Tucson and the Padres, making 49 appearances with Tucson and 14 with the San Diego. He was 0-2 with a 2.08 ERA (2 ER, 8.2 IP) with six strikeouts in 14 games for the Padres and was 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA (23 ER, 46.0 IP) with 41 strikeouts in 49 appearances with Tucson.
Hynes, 28, split the season between Class AA San Antonio, Triple-A Tucson and the Padres. With the Padres he posted a 9.00 ERA (17 ER, 17.0 IP) with 13 strikeouts in 22 appearances and overall in the minors posted 1.52 ERA (8 ER, 47.1 IP) with 58 strikeouts in 41 combined appearances with San Antonio and Tucson. He was selected from Tucson on July 14 and made his Major League debut that day. He limited left-handed hitters to a .156 (5-for-32) batting average.
