SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have selected right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer from Triple-A Tucson, have placed outfielder Carlos Quentin on paternity leave and have designated for assignment right-handed pitcher Thad Weber. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Stauffer, 30, was 2-2, 3.16 ERA (15 ER, 42.2 IP) with 38 strikeouts in eight starts for Triple-A Tucson this season, last pitching on Saturday against Round Rock. He began the 2012 season on the 15-day DL on April 5 with a strained right elbow, was reinstated on May 14 to make the start and placed back on the 15-day DL on May 18 with a right elbow strain. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 10 before undergoing season-ending surgery on right elbow August 31 to repair flexor tendon. In parts of seven seasons with San Diego, he is 23-31 with a 3.94 ERA (193 ER, 441.0 IP) with 304 strikeouts in 96 games (70 starts). He originally signed by the Padres as a first-round selection (fourth overall) in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and re-signed as a minor league free agent on January 29, 2013.

Quentin, 30, did not play in yesterday's game against the Nationals, missing the game due to the birth of his first born child, a baby boy, Clark and was placed on paternity leave list prior to tonight's game. He is eligible to return as early as tomorrow and as late as Monday, May 20. In 28 games this season, he is hitting .181 (15-for-83) with 10 runs, five doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI.

Weber, 28, has had two stints with the Padres and was last optioned to Triple-A Tucson on April 24 after being recalled on April 20. The right-hander appeared in two games with San Diego, including working a career-high 4.1 scoreless innings on April 23, against the Milwaukee Brewers at Petco Park. In six starts for Triple-A Tucson, he has gone 4-1 with a 3.93 ERA (15 ER, 34.1 IP) and 26 strikeouts against four walks. Over parts of two Major League seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2012) and Padres (2013), he has gone 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA (6 ER/13.0 IP) in five relief appearances.
