Padres Sign RHP Jordan Lyles to One-Year Contract with Club Option

Club also designates LHP Travis Wood for assignment

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres have signed right-handed pitcher Jordan Lyles to a one-year Major League contract with a club option for the 2019 season, Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller announced today. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated left-hander Travis Wood for assignment.
 
Lyles, 27, split the 2017 season between the Colorado Rockies and Padres and went 1-5 with a 7.75 ERA (60 ER, 69.2 IP), 55 strikeouts and 22 walks over 38 games (five starts). He also made five starts for Triple-A El Paso, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA (10 ER, 20.0 IP) and 20 strikeouts against eight walks.
 
Since making his debut in 2011, Lyles ranks 25th among all Major League pitchers with a 50.4 ground ball percentage (min. 600.0 IP). Originally selected by the Houston Astros in the first round (38th overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, the 6-4, 230-pound right-hander has gone 28-48 with a 5.43 ERA (411 ER, 681.0 IP), 466 strikeouts and 232 walks in 182 appearances (107 starts) over parts of seven Major League seasons with the Astros (2011-2013), Rockies (2014-2017) and Padres (2017).
