Quentin sits, leaving room for Ciriaco's debut

SAN DIEGO -- Left fielder Carlos Quentin was scratched from the starting lineup before Saturday's game against the D-backs, giving utilityman Pedro Ciriaco, in a roundabout way, his first start with his new team.

Quentin was in the original starting lineup but was scratched with what manager Bud Black called left shoulder discomfort.

"We don't want to press this right now; he thought he did it on a swing last night," Black said before Saturday's game.

In Quentin's place, Logan Forsythe moved from second base to left field, a position he has never played at the Major League level.

But Forsythe spent the winter in San Diego working out at Petco Park, where he also took fly balls and worked with first-base coach Dave Roberts, who works with the team's outfielders.

This move gave the Padres a chance to let Ciriaco, obtained Friday from the Red Sox for a player to be named later, a chance to make his first appearance with the team.

The Padres traded for Ciriaco to give them some infield depth with second baseman Jedd Gyorko on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.
