Sources: Washington, Tingler on short list

October 12th, 2019

The Padres have progressed past the initial stages of their managerial search and have honed in on a few top candidates, sources said Friday.

One of those candidates is former Rangers skipper and current Braves third-base coach Ron Washington, who is slated to interview this weekend, according to a source. It's unclear whether he's done so already.

Among the others who have interviewed are former interim manager Rod Barajas, former Angels manager Brad Ausmus and Rangers player-development coordinator Jayce Tingler. Both Tingler and Washington have relationships with Padres general manager A.J. Preller that date back to their time together in the Rangers organization.

Tingler and Washington are among the short list of candidates, according to a source. It's unclear whether Ausmus and/or Barajas are, as well.

Washington, 67, managed the Rangers for eight seasons, posting a 664-611 record. He won two American League pennants, losing to the Giants in the 2010 World Series and the Cardinals in '11. He resigned following the '14 season, citing personal reasons. Washington later acknowledged his need to work on his marriage following an extramarital affair.

The following May, Washington joined the A's as an infield coach. Ahead of the 2017 season, he joined the Braves’ staff.

The Padres have not placed a timetable on their managerial search. But they're expected to move somewhat quickly this month in order to give the new skipper a chance to build his coaching staff. One source expressed a belief that an overhaul on the coaching staff was likely.
