Stults, Stauffer reach one-year deals
Padres tender offers to eight other arbitration-eligible players
SAN DIEGO -- The Padres agreed to one-year deals with left-handed pitcher Eric Stults and righty Tim Stauffer while also tendering contracts to their eight other arbitration-eligible players before Monday's deadline.
Stults, who turns 34 on Dec. 9, won a career-high 11 games last season for the Padres. He finished 11-13 with a 3.93 ERA over 33 starts. Stults also eclipsed the 200-innings mark (203 2/3) for the first time in his career.
Stults will make $2.75 million in 2014, a substantial raise from the $507,600 he made last season, which was his second with the team.
Stauffer, 31, was 3-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 43 games (69 2/3 innings) last season in long relief. He'll make $1.6 million in 2014, up from $1 million.
The Padres also tendered contracts to third baseman Chase Headley, reliever Luke Gregerson, starting pitchers Ian Kennedy, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross, outfielder/first baseman Kyle Blanks, outfielder Jesus Guzman and shortstop Everth Cabrera, who was an All-Star in 2013.
Stults figures to be a candidate for a rotation spot again in 2014, along with Ross, Cashner, Kennedy and recent free-agent signee Josh Johnson. There are several others in contention for spots in the rotation, including Cory Luebke, Robbie Erlin, Joe Wieland and Burch Smith.
