The Padres landed 16-year-old outfielder/left-hander Zayed Salinas for an $800,000 signing bonus earlier this month, making a splash on the international market. It now appears they're intent on letting Salinas develop as a two-way player. 

Salinas is a local product and could become something of a fan favorite if he reaches San Diego. He came through the Tijuana Toros youth system and comes highly regarded on both sides of the ball. He's an athletic 6-foot-2, 180 pounds with strong bat-to-ball skills and speed on offense. On the mound, he boasts a fastball that hits the low 90s, along with a curve and a changeup.

Salinas is the latest addition to an already strong international class that includes shortstop Reginald Preciado and center fielder Ismael Mena (who currently rank as Nos. 22 and 23, respectively, among MLB Pipeline's top 30 Padres prospects). The additional international bonus pool money that the Padres used to sign Salinas came from their trade of Travis Jankowski to Cincinnati.
