Padres announce 2022 Opening Day roster

PEORIA, Ariz. – The San Diego Padres have finalized their Opening Day 28-man roster, President of Baseball Operations & General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

The club has selected the contracts of infielder C.J. Abrams and outfielder Jose Azocar, and placed both right-handers Mike Clevinger (right knee sprain) and Luis García (right oblique strain) on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to April 4. Additionally, the club placed infielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (left wrist fracture) on the 60-day IL, designated right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler for assignment, and optioned right-hander Reiss Knehr and outfielder Brent Rooker to Triple-A El Paso. With today’s moves, the Padres have a full 40-man roster.

The Opening Day roster features 11 right-handed pitchers, four left-handers, two catchers, seven infielders and four outfielders. Six players are making their first appearance on a Major League Opening Day roster, including C.J. Abrams, Austin Adams, Jose Azocar, Austin Nola, Robert Suarez and Steven Wilson. Four of those players’ first appearance will mark their Major League debut (Abrams, Azocar, Suarez and Wilson).

The Padres open up the 2022 season tonight at Chase Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. PT.
