Triple-A El Paso - Right-handed starter Jacob Nix

Ranked the Padres' No. 14 prospect by the MLB Pipeline, Nix allowed five hits while striking out three over six shutout innings in his debut for the Chihuahuas last Saturday. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound, 22-year-old had a 2.05 ERA in nine starts for Double-A San Antonio before getting promoted on August 2nd. Nix was a third-round pick in the 2015 Draft.

Insider's Note: It's awesome to see Jacob pitching at full health and showing his true potential. He can command several plus pitches. 

Double-A San Antonio - Right fielder Taylor Kohlwey

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Kohlwey was a 21st-round pick in the 2016 Draft out of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Kohlwey, 24, was 9-for-18 last week with a double, a triple, a home run, three walks, a stolen base, five runs scored and five RBIs. He hit .500 for the week with a .611 on-base percentage, a .833 slugging percentage and a 1.405 OPS.

Insider's Note: Taylor is a solid defender who uses the entire field on offense. He has surprising speed when he gets going. 

Advanced Single-A Lake Elsinore - First baseman Brad Zunica

The 6-foot-6, 254-pound Zunica hit three home runs last week bringing his season total to 15. Zunica, 22, was a 15th-round pick in the 2015 Draft out of Lakewood Ranch High in Bradenton, Fla. He was 6-for-19 last week with a walk, a sacrifice fly, three runs scored and six RBIs for a slash line of .315/.368/.789/1.157.

Insider's Note: Brad brings big time power. As his discipline at the plate increases, it's exciting to see where it takes him. 

Single-A Fort Wayne - Right fielder Jack Suwinski

The 6-foot-2, 206-pound Suwinski was 9-for-25 last week in a six-game hitting streak with five doubles, two homers, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice fly, five runs scored and six RBIs. Suwinski, who turned 20 on July 29, was a 15th-round pick in the 2016 Draft out of Taft High in Chicago. His slash line last week was .360/.407/1.000/1.407.     

Insider's Note: Jack worked his tail off all offseason until now to be where he is at currently. It's good to see his hard work paying off. 

Short-Season Single-A Tri-City - Shortstop Owen Miller

The 6-foot, 190-pound product of Illinois State was the Padres' third-round pick in June. The 21-year-old, right-handed hitter was 8-for-23 last week with two doubles and eight walks. He hit .335 for the week with a .395 on-base percentage and a .440 slugging percentage for a .835 OPS. He is also hitting .335 on the season.

Insider's Note: Owen has an advanced approach at the plate with great discipline. He uses the whole field with his bat and is a tough out at the plate.

Single-A Dominican Summer League - Catcher Brandon Valenzuela

The 17-year-old from Sonora, Mexico, was 6-for-17 last week with three doubles and a home run. He also drew seven walks with a stolen base, four runs scored and three RBIs. The 6-foot, 170-pound Valenzuela had a .353 batting average for the week with a .765 on-base percentage and a .706 slugging percentage for a 1.461 OPS.

Insider's Note: Brandon is an exciting young player who has developed a lot this year. He's getting bigger and stronger and the work is showing in his play on the field.

Arizona Rookie League - Shortstop Xavier Edwards

The 5-foot-10, 155-pound, switch-hitting 18-year-old was 7-for-14 last week to push his season batting average to .403. Drafted in the Compensation Round A of June's Draft out of North Broward Prep in Florida, Edwards also had two doubles, four walks, two steals, five runs scored and four RBIs last week for a slash line of .500/.611/.643/1.253.

Insider's Note: Xavier ran a 3.84 to 1B first base on a bunt the other night. The kid has awesome tools and can impact the game in many ways on all sides of the ball. He's a dynamic player.
