LADELPHIA -- Carlos Ruiz, statistically, has not only been one of the best catchers in baseball this season, he has been one of the best hitters.
He entered Tuesday just short of being a qualifier, but if he had enough plate appearances, he would have been first in the big leagues in hitting (.368), fifth in on-base percentage (.416), sixth in slugging percentage (.600) and fifth in OPS (1.016).
But Ruiz ranked a distant fourth among National League catchers in fan voting for the All-Star Game in the first ballot update released on Tuesday. Ruiz had 562,021 votes, putting him nearly 450,000 votes behind Yadier Molina, who leads with a little more than 1.1 million votes. Buster Posey (1,072,464) and Brian McCann also have more votes.
"I think everybody wants to be there," said Ruiz, who has never made an All-Star team. "You play to win, win the World Series, make an All-Star Game ... there's a lot of things you want to do as a player. There's a lot of good catchers. There's nothing I can do, just play hard every day and help my team."
Hunter Pence was just outside the top 10 for NL outfielders, garnering 446,460 votes.
