STON -- Saturday's 5-0 loss to the Astros damaged the Phillies' chances of getting the second Wild-Card spot on Saturday. The loss dropped Philadelphia to .500 at 73-73 and they're now chasing the Cardinals, Dodgers, Pirates and Brewers for the final Wild-Card spot behind Atlanta.
With the Dodgers' comeback win on Saturday vs. the Cardinals, the Phillies now trail both Los Angeles and St. Louis by three games for the second Wild Card slot.
"We have to keep playing. We got to play better," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "I know it is one game, you can't get down."
It wasn't a good night for the Phillies, who were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. While the Phillies lost, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee won.
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
