Ryan's six hits in a game tops in Phils' history

Philadelphia Phillies

There have been over 1,900 players who have worn the Phillies uniform in the franchise's 130 previous seasons. Only one ever had six hits in a game.

That one was Connie Ryan, a 33-year-old second baseman. During a 14-12 day-game loss to the Pirates in Pittsburgh on April 16, 1953, Ryan went 6-for-6 as the leadoff hitter. It was the Phillies' third game of the season.

Ryan's at-bat-by-at-bat performance:

First inning: single
Third inning: single
Fifth inning: single and a double (nine-run inning)
Seventh inning: double
Ninth inning: single

In the first three games, Ryan was 9-for-13, hitting a robust .692. Ryan was hitless in his next game, which came four days later.

Ryan was dealt to the Phillies in a seven-player trade with the Cincinnati Reds during the 1951 Winter Meetings. He hit .241 in 154 games in 1952. Four months after his record-setting performance, the Chicago White Sox claimed him on waivers from the Phillies. Ryan was hitting .296 in 90 games at the time the Sox picked him up. He spent most of his career with the Braves and was part of their organization in three cities, Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta.
