Phillies Minor League Review (May 20-26)

Players of the Week

Pitcher - RHP, Seth Rosin, Reading… Two starts… 2-0, 2.28 ERA (2 ER, 14.0 IP), 8 H, 2 BB, 13 SO… Rosin started the week strong setting career highs in both strikeouts and innings pitched on 5/20 vs Altoona… Rosin went 8.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 8 SO in REA's 6-3 win… Rosin followed up his 8.0 inning gem with 6.0 innings in his next start, allowing 1 unearned run in a 5-1 REA win 5/25 at Harrisburg… Rosin held opponents to a .163 AVG (8-49) this week and has a .230 OPP AVG (50-217) this season… The 6'6 righty has been a model of consistency this year, giving up 3 ER or less in 9 of his 10 starts… Rosin, who is in his first full season as a starter, ranks 6th in the EL with a 1.08 WHIP… Rosin also took home honors from the Eastern League as their Pitcher of the Week for the same time frame… The 24-year-old Rosin was acquired from the San Francisco Giants with Tommy Joseph and Nate Schierholtz for Hunter Pence on 7/31/12… Rosin was originally selected in the 4th round of the 2010 draft by San Francisco.

Player - SS, Roman Quinn, Lakewood… Batted .370 (10-27) in 7 G, 6 R, 3 RBI, 6 BB, 2B, 3B, HR, 5 SB… On May 6, Quinn's batting average stood at .196 (22-112), in the 17 games since that point Quinn has hit .358 (24-67) with 9 multi-hit games and has raised his batting average 61 points to .257 for the year… Quinn leads the organization in stolen bases with 24 and has been thrown out only five times in 29 chances… In only his second season of professional baseball, Quinn has scored 81 runs in 111 career games between Williamsport and Lakewood… The 20-year-old Quinn was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the 2011 draft out of Port St. Joe High School and signed by Aaron Jersild.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs - International League North Division…24-26, 3rd place… 6-0 for the week… The Pigs just capped off the best homestand in franchise history by taking 7 of 8 at Coca-Cola Park… Overall the Pigs have won 8 of their last 9… LHV capped off their best week of the year with a four-game sweep of visiting Norfolk, who had the 4th best record in all of MiLB when they arrived to CCP (pre-sweep)… During the current 6 G winning streak, LHV has outscored their opponents 40-16, and are hitting .293 with a staff ERA of 2.67… Over the weekend (5/24-26) the Pigs swiped 13 bases, the most ever over a three-game stretch in franchise history… 1B Josh Fields paced the LHV offense hitting .458 (11-for-24), 8 R, 2 2B, 3B, 3 SB… Fields hit safely in all 6 G, and had four multi-hit games… 3B Cody Asche provided some pop, adding 6 hits, 5 of which were for extra bases (2 2B, 2 3B, HR) and 7 RBI… Asche has now hit 4 HR in his last 72 AB after hitting only 1 in his first 106 AB this season… INF Pete Orr hit .353 (6-for-17), 2 2B, 3B, HR… OF Steve Susdorf batted .417 (5-for-12), 2B, 3 SB… OF Leandro Castro hit .316 (6-for-19) 2B, 3 SB… It should be noted LHV leads the IL in triples with 21 at the time of print… RHP Ethan Martin won his fourth-straight game 5/23 vs Norfolk… Martin is now 4-0 with a 2.52 ERA (7 ER, 25.0 IP) over his last four starts… LHP Raul Valdes made his 2nd start of the year for LHV, going 4.2 IP scoreless 5/24 vs Norfolk… Valdes now has a 20.2 IP scoreless streak in the IL dating back to 2012… LHP Jake Diekman had 3 SV this week and leads the organization with 7… RHP Mike Stutes made two scoreless appearances before getting the call to the big league club… LHP Joe Savery made 4 scoreless appearances (5.0 IP), giving up 1 H, 1 BB, with 8 SO.

Reading Fightin Phils - Eastern League Eastern Division…19-29, 6th place… 4-2 for the week… Reading continues to mash at the plate, leading the EL with 43 HR through the team's first 48 G… The Fightins bullpen had a 12.1 IP scoreless streak snapped when Destin Hood homered off RHP Brody Colvin 5/26… According to Fightins PR, the Reading bullpen had allowed only 2 H in 10.2 scoreless innings during the series prior to Hood's HR… OF Zach Collier batted .368 (7-for-19), 2 HR, 2B, 2 SB… C Cameron Rupp hit .368 (7-for-19), 2 HR, 2 2B… OF Anthony Hewitt belted his 1st HR at the double-A level, a two-run walk-off HR 5/22 vs Altoona… RHP Seth Rosin earned Player of the Week honors with 14.0 IP, 2 ER, 13 SO and only 2 BB… As mentioned above, the REA bullpen has been dominant of late, allowing just 4 ER in 20.2 innings of work (1.74 ERA)… LHP Jay Johnson has led the way for the Fightins relievers, adding another 4.0 innings of scoreless relief… Johnson hasn't allowed an ER over his last 7 G (9.0 IP)… RHP Michael Nesseth chipped in with 3.0 scoreless innings of his own… RHP Juan Sosa (1.2 IP), RHP Kyle Simon (1.0 IP) and LHP Maurcio Robles (1.1 IP) also were not scored upon this week… LHP Jesse Biddle made two starts, going 1-1 with 15 SO in 11.2 innings… Biddle leads the organization with 66 SO this season (next: Hernandez, CLR: 55).

Clearwater Threshers - Florida State League North Division…24-25, 4th place… 2-5 for the weekOF Cameron Perkins continues his impressive run at the plate batting .375 (9-for-24), 2 2B, 3B… Perkins leads the FSL with a .353 AVG this year… Perkins, who hit .304 (82-for-270) in his first professional season last year at Williamsport (A), has a .323 AVG (148-for-458), 61 R, 41 2B over his last 115 professional games… 3B Maikel Franco had 7 H, including 2 HR which ties him for the organization lead in HR (10)… Perkins and Franco lead both the FSL and organization in 2B (18)… OF Kelly Dugan batted .348 (8-for-23), 4 2B… C Logan Moore, a native of Scranton, PA, belted his first 2 HR this season, while scoring 6 R… OF Aaron Altherr had 7 H to go along with 3 SB… 2B Jonathan Roof hit .412 (7-for-17), HR, 2 2B, 3B… RHP Ryan O'Sullivan made 3 appearances in relief, giving up 1 ER in 6.0 innings of work (1.50 ERA)… LHP Mario Hollands was solid in his only start of the week (5.1 IP, 1 ER, 8 SO)… RHP Perci Garner picked up the W in his only start (6.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 SO)… Garner is now 4-0 this year with an organizational best 2.32 ERA (14 ER, 54.1 IP) (next: Arias, CLR: 2.47 ERA)… RHP Luis Garcia picked up his 6th SV and totaled 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Lakewood BlueClaws - South Atlantic League North Division…20-29, 6th place… 2-4 for the week… LWD's roller coaster season continued as they were losers of five-straight to end the week… SS Roman Quinn earned Player of the Week honors with his work at the plate and on the base paths (.370 AVG, 6 R, 2B, 3B, HR, 6 BB, 5 SB)… 1B Art Charles belted his team leading 6th HR… SS Angelo Mora batted .316 (6-for-19), 2 2B, 3B… C Justin Dalles started 3 G behind the dish this week, batting .636 (7-for-11), 3 2B… LHP Yoel Mecias was solid in his only start going 5.0 innings, 1 ER, 7 SO… Mecias has been dominant in the month of May; over his last 6 starts he is 3-1, 1.50 ERA (5 ER, 30.0 IP), 37 SO (11.1 SO/9.0 IP)… RHP Jonathan Musser was solid in 2 starts, going 1-1, 1.80 ERA (2 ER, 10.0 IP)… RHP Jordan Guth continued his impressive work out of the bullpen; 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 SO in 2 appearances... As a starter Guth is 1-4, 5.24 ERA (13 ER, 22.1 IP) versus 0-0, 1.33 ERA (3 ER, 20.1 IP) as a reliever… RHP Geoff Broussard made two scoreless appearances in relief (3.1 IP).
