CINCINNATI -- There has been a shake-up in the Phillies’ front office.

The Phillies said Tuesday evening that Johnny Almaraz stepped down as the club's amateur scouting director. He was not demoted. Almaraz requested to step away from the grind of the position to spend more time with his family. He will remain in the organization as a special assistant to scouting and player development.

Almaraz ran each of the last five MLB Drafts for the Phils. His first-round selections included Cornelius Randolph (2015), Mickey Moniak ('16), Adam Haseley ('17), Alec Bohm ('18) and Bryson Stott ('19). Almaraz also ran the Braves’ international scouting department when Atlanta signed Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies.

“Johnny Almaraz has had an enormously successful career in baseball,” Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said in a statement. “He has been instrumental in the signing and development of many quality big league players. We are grateful for the five years that he spent leading our scouting department, and we feel very fortunate that he will continue to have an impact on our scouting and player development efforts in his new role.”

The Phils will consider internal and external candidates as they look to fill Almaraz’s position. Greg Schilz, Philadelphia's assistant director of amateur scouting, will be a candidate.
