PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies right fielder Nick Williams took a ball off his face in the eighth inning Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. He left the game.
"He's fine," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said after a 6-5 win over the Cardinals in 10 innings. "I saw him after the game. He had a bloody nose. When I went out there to look at him, blood was coming out of his nose and it was the right time to make that switch. I don't want to put anybody at risk."
Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter hit a fly ball toward the right-field wall with a runner on first and one out. Williams pursued, but the ball hit high on the wall and ricocheted directly onto his face.
Aaron Altherr took his place in right field and hit a walk-off two-run double in the 10th to send the Phillies home winners.
