Velasquez activated, pitches out of 'pen

May 25th, 2019

MILWAUKEE -- was activated from the 10-day disabled list Friday ahead of the Phillies' series opener against the Brewers at Miller Park.

The right-hander had been out since May 11 with a strained forearm. He was 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA in seven appearances spanning 30 1/3 innings prior to sustaining the injury.

Manager Gabe Kapler said Velasquez would be available out of the bullpen for the time being, and he wasted no time tossing the right-hander into the relief mix. Velasquez pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 6-4 win over the Brewers at Miller Park.

Kapler had said prior to the game that Velasquez was a candidate to start Tuesday against the Cardinals. That would have been 's next scheduled turn, but Irvin was optioned to Triple-A after a rough outing against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Wednesday.

Kapler was non-committal on who would get that opportunity, but said it would likely be Velasquez or , who has been pitching for Triple-A Lehigh Valley since being optioned in late April after posting an 8.35 ERA through his first four starts.

"We have a couple of scenarios that we're thinking about," Kapler said.

In five seasons with the Phillies, Velasquez had been the starter in 75 of his 77 appearances entering Friday. His first relief outing came last July when he worked a scoreless 16th inning in Philadelphia's 7-4 victory over the Dodgers. He came out of the bullpen again in his first action of 2019, striking out a pair in a scoreless inning against the Nationals on April 2.

Kapler discussed the opportunity with Velasquez on Wednesday, and again via text message Thursday night.

"He's comfortable with the idea," Kapler said. "He was excited about being activated today, and I discussed the possibilities again. He seems not just on board, but excited. I don't think we'll ever get to the place where he feels like he's not a starting pitcher. However, he's been a team player."

Herrera sits against RHP

was not in the starting lineup Friday against Milwaukee right-hander Chase Anderson. Herrera has typically sat against left-handed starters, but he's just 1-for-23 (.043) at the plate over his last 10 games, so Kapler gave the start in center.

"[Herrera] understands the situation," Kapler said. "Scott has swung the bat well, and is a good option to play center field. The best guy is going to play."

Herrera entered Friday's game in the bottom of the fifth, and went 0-for-1 with a walk and a strikeout.

Quinn gets closer

Outfielder  took part in batting practice Friday, another positive step as he works his way back from a strained right groin that has sidelined him since April 25. He also missed the first three weeks of the season with a strained right oblique.

"Our thought process is still the same, the timeline hasn't changed," Kapler said. "The likelihood is he'll go on a rehab assignment when we go out to the West Coast [at the end of May]."
