Phillies Minor League review: July 16-22

Pitcher: RHP Austin Hyatt, Reading. 2-0, 13 2/3 innings, 9 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 13 strikeouts. Has won 3 of his last 4 starts. Hyatt began his season in AAA, where he went 2-6 with a 5.47 ERA and was moved to AA on June 2. With Reading, he is 4-3 with a 4.64 for 10 starts. He owns a 33-20 record in three-plus Minor League seasons. Hyatt was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week by MiLB.com. The 26-year-old was selected in the 15th round of 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Alabama and signed by Mike Stauffer.

Player: SS Edgar Duran, Clearwater. Duran hit .444 in 6 games. Three of his 8 hits were doubles, while 2 were home runs. Duran also drove in 6 runs, scored 6 runs and stole 2 bases. He went 6-for-12 in his last 3 games and is hitting .323 in his last 10. For the season, the shortstop is hitting .262 in 86 games, has hit 3 homers, and recorded 28 RBI. Duran was named the Florida State League Player of the Week by MiLB.com. The 20-year-old was signed as an amateur free agent in 2007 by Sal Agostinelli and Jesus Mendez.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs, International League North Division, 2-5, 3rd place.

Designated hitter Hector Luna batted .483 in 7 games. He collected an organization-high 14 hits, and hit 3 home runs and 7 RBIs. Left fielder Domonic Brown hit .364 in 6 games. He also hit 2 doubles and 5 home runs. Brown's hitting .306 in last 10, but re-aggravated his right knee attempting a diving catch on Sunday and left the game, ending a 5-game hitting streak. Infielder Kevin Fransden leads the International League in hits (114) and doubles (34). Tyler Cloyd (9-1) won on Monday, giving up 1 run spanning 6 2/3 innings. Clay earned a no decision on Saturday, when he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. The IronPig's other win went to Matt Wright (1-1) on Thursday. B.J. Rosenberg started the game, lasted 4 innings, and gave up 5 hits while striking out 5.

Reading Phillies, Eastern League Eastern Division,3-4, 3rd place.

Reading began the week with an 11-2, 15-hit romp on Monday, then followed it by getting shut out 3 straight games. The Phillies ended a 29-inning scoreless streak with 8-3 win on Saturday. The team ended the week losing, 13-12, in 12 innings after leading by five runs going into the bottom of the ninth at Trenton. Catcher Sebastian Valle hit .370, and had a club-high 10 hits, including 2 doubles. He hit his 10th and 11th home runs. Valle also drove in six runs and ended the week on a 6-game hitting streak. Third baseman Cody Asche hit .321 in 7 games with 9 hits. He also led club with 5 runs scored. Left fielder D'Arby Myers had a 4-hit game on Sunday. First baseman Darin Ruf hit his 17th home run, tops in the organization. Mario Hollands (2-4) lost, 1-0, on Thursday, after allowing a sixth-inning solo home run. He only surrendered 2 hits in 7 innings, and retired 15 batters in a row at one point. Jonathan Pettibone (8-7) ended a personal 2-game losing streak on Friday. He pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, while striking out seven. Tyler Knigge gave up 3 runs in that game, the first runs he's allowed since May 29 (19 2/3 innings). In the fateful ninth the next day, he gave up a home run, the first he's allowed all season, which spans 39 appearances and 49 innings.

Clearwater Threshers, Florida State League North Division, 3-2, 2nd place, 2nd half

Right fielder Anthony Hewitt scored 5 runs and had 8 hits, including his 10th double, third triple and 10th homer run of the season. He also collected his 12th steal. Hewitt finished the week on a 7-game hitting streak. Catcher Cameron Rupp hit his ninth home run. First baseman Jim Murphy had 2 RBI, giving him 61, which matches Reading's Ruf for the organization high. Murphy's 28 doubles leads the FSL. Left hander Jesse Biddle went 1-0 in two starts. He pitched 13 innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out 14. Lefty Austin Wright (8-4) won on Tuesday, as he gave up two hits, had seven strikeouts and didn't give up a run in six innings. Right hander Brody Colvin (5-5), lost, 2-1, on Thursday after giving up two runs in seven innings. He and Biddle are each 2-1, with a 3.04 in July. Four pitchers have topped 100 innings: Lefty Adam Morgan, 101 (111 strikeouts); Wright, 102 2/3 (96 strikeouts), Biddle, 101 (104 strikeouts) and Colvin, 100 2/3 (90 strikeouts). Right hander Perci Garner has tossed 97 2/3 innings

Lakewood BlueClaws, South Atlantic League North Division,2-4, started the week with a 3-game losing streak; 3rd place

First baseman Chris Duffy, "slumped" while hitting .286 and three home runs. Duffy drove in organization-high 8 runs and hit two home runs. Five of those eight RBIs came in Monday's game. Right fileder Kelly Dugan hit .429 with three doubles. Catcher Josh Ludy has hit safely in 12 of last 13 games after starting his pro career 0-5 after two games. Right-handed reliever Kenny Giles (3-3) won on Friday. He pitched 3 innings, and had 7 strikeouts. Left hander Lino Martinez (5-4) won the first game on Sunday.

Williamsport Crosscutters, New York-Penn League Pinckney Division, 2-5, 6th place

First baseman Chris Serritella hit his 5th homer, and now has batted in a club-high 24 RBIs. Left fielder Larry Greene, had two doubles among his seven hits. He's hitting .306 in the past 10 games. Shortstop Roman Quinn tripled in each of his first 3 games, he now has a club-high five this season. Quinn also stole 3 bases, giving him 13 in 17 attempts. Infielder Cameron Perkins went 4-for-9, with 4 RBI in the first two games of the week. Righty Chris Nichols was 2-0 in 2 appearances. He didn't give up a run in six innings, surrendered three hits and struck out five. Right hander Geoff Broussard recorded his second save. Kevin Brady earned a no decision in his four-inning start.

Gulf Coast League Phillies, North Division,4-3, 4th place

Outfielder Andrew Pullin hit .455 in 7 games, he had 10 hits and batted in five runs. Pullin ended the week on a seven-game hitting streak; he is hitting .438 in past 10 gamesm and leads the club with .359 batting average. First baseman William Carmona, hit .423 during the week, had a club-high 11 hits. His nine-game hitting streak ended Thursday. Carmona has recorded a hit in 11 of last 12 games. Pullin and Carmona hit back-to-back homers on Saturday, it was the first pro home run for each. Righty Manaure Martinez earned a no decision on Tuesday, after giving up one run on two hits in five innings. It was Martinez's fourth straight start in which he's allowed one run. Left hander Franklyn Vargas (3-1) won on Friday after pitching five innings of no-hit baseball. Righty Felix Santos (3-1) won on Tuesday; opponents are hitting .133 against him in the past nine games. Santos has pitched 10.1 innings, while giving up one hit ans striking out 10. Luis Morales (1-4) won his first game in the team's second game on Wednesday. Andrew Anderson (1-0) also got his first pro win on Sunday.
