Phillies sign Fontenot

Infielder Mike Fontenot has agreed to a minor league contract with the Phillies, Assistant General Manager Scott Proefrock announced today.

Fontenot will report to Phillies extended spring training in Clearwater, Florida next week.  The 31-year-old batted .278 with 3 RBI in 13 Cactus League games for San Francisco this spring.  He was released by the Giants on April 3. 

Last season with the Giants, he hit .227 with 4 home runs and 21 RBI in 85 games.  Defensively, he appeared in 37 games at shortstop (33 starts), 23 at second base (16 starts) and made 16 starts at third base.

Originally selected by Baltimore in the first round (19th overall) of the June 2001 draft, Fontenot has hit .263 with 84 doubles, 13 triples, 26 home runs and 158 RBI over 535 games between the Cubs (2005, 2007-10) and Giants (2010-11).
