Phils acquire Bernadina, option Martinez

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies on Wednesday signed outfielder Roger Bernadina, whom the Nationals released Monday.

The Phillies optioned Michael Martinez to make room for Bernadina on the 25-man roster.

Bernadina, 29, hit .178 with two home runs and six RBIs in 85 games this season. He hit .291 with a .372 on-base percentage in 129 games last season. He is a career .243 hitter with 25 homers, 107 RBIs, 56 stolen bases, .310 on-base percentage and.360 slugging percentage in 468 games.

He can play all three outfield positions.

"He's an athletic guy with ability and tools and also has the ability to play in center field," Phillies interim manager Ryne Sandberg said. "He'll get his opportunity, and he'll get a good look. With the way things are set up here personnel-wise, he needs to look at that as an opportunity to show what he can do."
