Phils' Gonzalez felt 'pinch' in throwing shoulder

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The reality is Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez had a small chance to make the Opening Day roster. He has not yet looked ready to compete at the big league level.

But any chance he had took a hit Tuesday following the soreness he felt in the front of his right shoulder. Gonzalez, who entered Spring Training last month as a great unknown after signing a $12 million contract with the Phillies last summer, is going to miss time, although he said Thursday morning at Bright House Field he is uncertain how much.

Gonzalez, who spoke through a translator, said he felt a "pinch" in his shoulder while long-tossing. He said he has never felt something like this before.

"I've got to deal with it," Gonzalez said. "As long as I'm here, I feel like I've got an opportunity [to make the team]. Those are situations out of my control, but as long as I'm here, I've got a shot."

He hopes to try to throw in a few days, although that remains to be seen.

Gonzalez is the fifth Phillies pitcher in camp with a shoulder issue. He joins Cole Hamels, Mike Adams, Jonathan Pettibone and Ethan Martin.
